If you've looked for ingredients for more even-looking skin without harsh acids, you've probably come across copper peptide, also called GHK-Cu. Here's what it is, how to use it and what you can expect, without exaggerated promises.
What is GHK-Cu?
It's a small peptide (a short chain of amino acids) bound to copper. In skincare it's used in serums because of its light texture and because most skin types, including sensitive skin, tolerate it well.
Unlike chemical exfoliants, it doesn't work by removing layers of skin. That's why it doesn't usually cause the famous purging or peeling many people associate with routines for marks.
Who is it for?
- If you want to improve the look of marks, redness and texture left by breakouts.
- If your skin gets irritated by acids or retinoids.
- If you prefer a short routine you can keep up every day.
If you have active, painful or very inflamed breakouts, the right step is to see a dermatologist. A cosmetic serum can go alongside their advice, not replace it.
How to use it
- Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry.
- Apply 3 or 4 drops of serum and spread them with your fingertips.
- Follow with your moisturizer.
- During the day, always finish with sunscreen.
Use it morning and night. What matters most isn't the amount but consistency: applying it every day for several weeks.
What can I combine it with?
It works well with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, ceramides and sunscreen. If you already use pure vitamin C or exfoliating acids, use them at different times of day (for example, the acid at night on alternate days and the peptide in the morning) so you don't overload your skin.
What to expect and when?
Skin renews itself in cycles of several weeks. It's common to first notice it feels softer and more comfortable, and for the look of marks and texture to improve gradually. That's why we suggest a 90-day protocol with photos on days 1, 20, 40, 60 and 90: you compare with similar light and angle instead of relying on the mirror every morning.
Every skin is different and no ingredient changes everything in a week. If at any point you feel burning or irritation, stop using it.
